Superfast Project Phase 1:

In September 2014, Superfast South Yorkshire joined forces with BT in a multi-million pound deal to successfully extend the availability of high-speed fibre broadband to homes and businesses across the region.

This phase focussed on building the infrastructure to supply Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) connectivity, where fibre optic cables connect the phone exchange to the street cabinet, and copper cable connects the street cabinet to the premises.

Phase 2

A £10 million extension to the Superfast South Yorkshire programme saw the SFSY team working with Openreach to bring Full Fibre ‘ultrafast’ (also known as Fibre to the Premises, FTTP, Fibre to the Home, FTTH, or Gigabit-capable,) connections to over 9,000 homes and businesses across the region, providing speeds of up to 1 Gigabit (1Gbps), 24 times faster than the UK average of 46Mbps.

Current coverage

South Yorkshire has one of the highest Superfast broadband coverage rates in the country, with over 99% of residents and businesses having access to broadband speeds of 30Mbps or above. 

The availability of gigabit capable broadband (broadband speeds of 1gbps/1000mbps,) in the South Yorkshire region stands at 86.67%, as of March 2024. This means we have already achieved the government's target of 85% gigabit-capable coverage by 2025, but that does not mean work will stop  there.
